An ear infection (acute otitis media) is often a bacterial or viral infection that affects the middle ear; the air-filled space behind the eardrum. Although any age person can have an ear infection, children are more likely than adults to be affected.
Due to the overuse of antibiotics for this condition, the rate of antibiotic-resistant infections has increased in recent years. As a result, recommendations released recently by the American Academy of Pediatrics discourage the use of antibiotic medications for most ear infections in children.
Dysfunction of the spine is often most associated with chiropractic treatment, but chiropractic care can also have a positive effect on the disorders of the visceral organs, such as otitis media. In other words, spinal adjustments directly affect the positioning and function of the Eustachian tube, blockage of which is a major cause of recurring ear infections. Cervical spinal adjustments also positively affect the drainage of the lymphatic system, therefore shorting the duration of ear infections.
